7. YA Assaji Thera
Kelahiran
Lahir di perkampungan Brahmana Donavatthu di dekat Kapilavatthu, Assaji muda merupakan anak dari salah satu delapan orang Brahmana yang diundang oleh Raja Suddhodana ke upacara pemberian nama Pangeran Siddhatta, yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Petapa Gotama sebelum Pencerahan Agung dan lalu menjadi Sang Buddha. Setelah orang tuanya meninggal, YA Assaji mengikuti YA Koṇḍañña menjadi petapa di hutan Uruwela dan melayani Petapa Gotama.
Sotāpanna Pertama di Dunia
Setelah petapa Gotama menjadi Sang Buddha, YA Assaji menjadi satu dari Lima Orang Petapa pertama yang mendengarkan khotbah pertama Sang Buddha, yaitu Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta, dan langsung menjadi Sotāpanna pertama di dunia. Lalu, beliau diterima menjadi bhikkhu oleh Sang Buddha. Keempat orang sesama petapanya ikut diterima sebagai bhikkhu dan mereka bersama-sama merupakan Saṅgha, yang semuanya kemudian menjadi Arahat. Keempat Arahat yang lain adalah Bhaddiya, Vappa, Mahānāma and Koṇḍañña.
Guru Pertama YA Sāriputta dalam Dhamma
YA Sāriputta pertama kali mendengar Dhamma melalui sebuah bait yang diucapkan oleh YA Assaji, langsung memperoleh Mata Dhamma dan menjadi Sotāpanna (orang suci tingkat pertama).
Bait termasyur tersebut berbunyi sebagai berikut:”
Tentang hal-hal yang muncul karena sebab,
Sang Tathagatha (Sang Buddha) telah membabarkan sebab tersebut,
Dan juga bagaimana berhentinya sebab tersebut.
Inilah doktrin Sang Pertapa Agung (Sang Buddha).”
Dalam kata lain, Kebenaran Mulia yang kedua dan ketiga telahdiungkapkan. Bait tersebut selanjutnya disebut sebagai Bait Assaji.
Sangat dihormat oleh YA Sāriputta
Selama hidupnya YA Sāriputta menunjukkan hormat kepada YA Assaji. Penjelasan tentang Syair 392 Dhammapada bercerita bahwa kapan pun YA Sāriputta berdiam di vihara yang sama dengan YA Assaji, langsung setelah menghormat Sang Buddha, beliau selalu pergi untuk menghormat sesepuh yang agung itu, sambil berpikir, ”Bhante ini adalah guru pertama saya. Karena beliaulah saya mengetahui Ajaran Sang Buddha.” Ketika YA Assaji berdiam di vihara lain, YA Sāriputta biasanya menghadap arah di mana sang sesepuh sedang berdiam dan bernamaskara (menghormat dengan kepala, dua tangan dan lutut menyentuh bumi).
7. The Venerable Assaji Thera
Birth
Born in the village of the Brahmin Donavatthu near Kapilavatthu, young Assaji was the son of one of the eight Brahmins invited by King Suddhodana to the naming ceremony of Prince Siddhatta, who was later to be known as the ascetic Gotama until the Great Enlightenment and then became the Buddha. After the death of his parents, the Venerable Assaji joined the Venerable Koṇḍañña to practice the ascetic life in Uruvelā and used to attend on the ascetic Gotama.
First Sotāpanna in the World
After the ascetic Gotama became the Supreme Buddha, the Venerable Assaji was one of the first five ascetics (the Pañcavaggiyā) who listened to the Buddha’s firsts ermon, the Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta, and become the first sotāpanna in the world. He was then ordained by the Buddha as a monk. His four fellow ascetics followed suit and they together formed the Saṅgha, all of whom subsequently became Arahants. The other four were Bhaddiya, Vappa, Mahānāma and Koṇḍañña.
The Venerable Sāriputta’s First Teacher in the Dhamma
The Venerable Sāriputta first learned the Dhamma through a stanza recited by the Venerable Assaji in Rājagaha, gained the Dhamma Eye on the spot and became a Sotāpanna (first degree saint).
The famous stanza reads as follows:
” Of those things that arise from cause,
The Tathagata has told the cause,
And also what their cessation is:
This is the doctrine of the Great Recluse.”
In other words, the second and third Noble Truths were revealed. The stanza was subsequently known as the Assaji stanza.
The Venerable Sāriputta respected the Venerable Assaji very much as his first teacher in the Dhamma. Verse 392 of the Dhammapada Commentary tells us an example of this respect: ”Whenever the Venerable Sāriputta lived in the same monastery as the venerable Assaji, immediately after having paid homage to the Buddha, he always went to venerate the Venerable Assjai, thinking:”This venerable one was my first teacher. It was through him that I came to know the Buddha’s Dispensation.” When the venerable Assaji lived in anotehr monastery, the Venerable Sāriputta used to face the direction in which he was living dan pay homage to him by touching the ground at five places (with the head, hands and feet) and saluting him with joined palms.
