19. YA Nāgasena Thera
Kitab Pertanyaan Raja Milinda mencatat bahwa beliau adalah putra Brahmana Sonuttara di desa Kajaṅgala di Pegunungan Himālaya.
Beliau sangat fasih dalam Triveda dan masuk Saṅgha di bawah YA Rohaṇa untuk belajar Dhamma Sang Buddha. Kemudian, beliau pergi belajar dari YA Assagutta di pertapaan Vattaniya. Di sana, pada suatu hari setelah selesai makan dan sambil berterima kasih kepada seorang umat awam wanita yang telah melayani YA Assagutta selama lebih dari 30 tahun, YA Nāgasena menjadi Sotāpanna. Lalu, beliau dikirim ke Pāṭaliputta, tempat beliau belajar di bawah YA Dhammarakkhita dan di sana menjadi Arahat. Setelah itu, beliau pergi ke parivena (lembaga pendidikan tinggi; seminari) Saṅkheyya di Sagala, tempat beliau bertemu dengan Raja Milinda. Diskusi-diskusi mereka tercatat dalam Kitab Pertanyaan Raja Milinda.
Menurut cerita dalam kehidupan yang sebelumnya, beliau adalah dewa yang bernama Mahāsena dan tinggal di sebuah istana yang bernama Ketumatῑ di Surga Tāvatiṁsa serta setuju untuk lahir di dunia manusia atas permintaan yang mendesak dari Dewa Sakka dan para Arahat yang dipimpin oleh YA Assagutta.
19. The Venerable Nagasena Thera
The Questions of King Milinda records that he was the son of the Brahmin Sonuttara, in the village of Kajaṅgala in the Himālayas.
He was well versed in the Vedas and entered the Order under the Venerable Rohaṇa to learn the Buddha’s teaching. Later he went to the Venerable Assagutta of the Vattaniya senāsana and studied under him. There, one day, at the conclusion of a meal, while giving thanks to a lay woman who had looked after the Venerable Assagutta for more than thirty years, the Venerable Nāgasena became a Sotāpanna. Then he was sent to Pāṭaliputta, where he studied under the Venerable Dhammarakkhita, and there he attained arahantship. Subsequently he went to the Saṅkheyya parivena in Sagala, where he met King Milinda. Their discussions were recorded in book entitled “the Questions of King Milinda.”
The book says that in his previous birth he was a deva, named Mahāsena, living in Tāvatiṁsa, in a palace called Ketumatῑ, and that he consented to be born among men at the insistent request of Sakka and the Arahants led by the Venerable Assagutta.
