10. The Venerable Kaṅkhā Revata Thera

Born to a very wealthy family in Sāvatthī. He first heard the Dhamma when he was visiting Kapilavatthu. After ordination as a monk, he concentrated his mind and reached the mundane jhānas, or absorptions. Using these absorptions, he then proceeded with the insight or vipassanā meditation, and attained arahantship.

Until Arahatship, the Venerable Revata oftentimes doubted everything, even the allowable ones, with regard to the Monastic Discipline. Therefore, he was nicknamed Kaṅkhā Revata, or the Doubter.

The Mahāgosinga Sutta (MN 32.5) records his answer to the Venerable Sāriputta’s question as which kind of bhikkhu could illuminate the Gosinga sala-tree Wood: ”Here friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu delights in solitary meditation and takes delight in solitary meditation; he is devoted to inetrnal serenity of mind, does not neglect meditation, possesses insight and dwells in empty huts. That kind of bhikkhu could illuminate this Gosinga Sala-tree Wood.”

In the Uttaramātu-peta Vatthu, Uttara’s mother having been born as a peta, and having wandered about for fifty years without water, came upon the Venerable Revata enjoying the siesta on the banks of the ganges and begged him for succor. Having learned her story, Revata gave various gifts to the Saṅgha in her name and so brought her happiness.

The Buddha granted him the title of the monk who excelled in quick transition to jhāna in the Noble Order.
